A line in the sand

I just wrapped on a project at my new job. It was my first project. . . I inherited it really. It was half started, and by no means, done in any way. The design direction was all over the place. The client was a nightmare, but I pressed on. I made hard decisions along the way. But things were getting done.
Until we got to the last piece of the puzzle. Of course, the last 10% of the project takes 90% of the time, but there was no end point. There was no stake in the ground or line in the sand that said, we are done after this point.
After this project, I realize how important that line is. Not just for a project, but for daily tasks as well.
Example: I need to accomplish this today, so after I am done, I will go home.
Because there was no line, even on the daily tasks, we had many many long nights over the last month. Some probably could have been avoided.
So going forward, if no one draws a line in the sand, in any situation, you have to do it. If not for everybody involved, do it for yourself.
