How fast can an iPhone app be built?
8 Comment(s) | Tuesday, December 18, 2007 |

Started a new iPhone lab for work. Design should be done tomorrow (I started to push pixels yesterday). Coding maybe 3 days. Man, we just had this idea and it is already almost done. Crazy.

We also posted a page on our site about the phizzpop challenge with screens and info. Check it out here.

Also, there have been some nice blog posts about the event. It is great to read these because during the event, I was so wound up trying to put on a good show and also had my head in the game. It is great to get a non-competitive perspective on the event.

Pictures of the event here...
Josh Holmes take on it...
And another perspective...

If you are reading this on an iphone, click the image below to see what we did for the final solution on the iphone.

I have missed writing here, but a new years resolution of mine (is it that time already) is to post more more more! Who will read it? Well a grand total of me is good enough to do so.

Like the last post, so much has happened.

My baby Cameron is growing like a weed and it is so much fun seeing the person she is becoming. That is by far the most amazing/important thing that has been going on is my family, but work has been keeping uber busy.

We wrapped on a few projects. Always great.

Personally, I do some freelance stuff on the side, and one of my good friends tapped me on the shoulder to do a re-design of their website for their company, The Alamo Drafthouse. It has taken a few months to do, but it is up and ready to check out previews and purchase tickets.

Check out the website!

Last, but certainly not least is something called the phizzpop design challenge sponsored by Microsoft. My company, thirteen23, along with 5 other companies were asked to do a 2.5 day challenge to solve a problem using microsoft technologies. Some of the other companies are frog design, projekt202, neudesic, and pop labs. It was a tough few days, and the presentations of the solutions had me a little nervous. But after all was said and done, we took home the win. That is very exciting for us because we are 4 guys and everyone else has a bit more than 4 guys. smile

We walked away with a ton of MS software and an XBox with Halo3. Nice stuff, but it is just nice to win. Below is a pic of Simon and I celebrating after I got a ton of sleep.

Expect a new DigiHal.com soon. smile

Happy holidays.

How fast things change. . .
5 Comment(s) | Monday, September 24, 2007 | General, Work,

Wow, it has been a whirl wind few months.

First, I was fortunate enough to be asked to re-design the Alamo Drafthouse Website. If you have ever lived in Austin, you know that the drafthouse is as much a cultural fixture here as anything in Austin could be. That should be launching soon.

Also, my daily scenery has changed.

I was sitting in an office off of 360 over looking beautiful trees and a serene landscape. Now I am in the heart of downtown, back in the hustle and bustle of things. I recently switched jobs. I am fortunate enough to break free of the traditional shackles of a job definition. More freedom in both my time and work. This is something I have been seeking for a while, and every jump got me closer to where I want to be. So now I am here, and I am having a blast building a world class company that will soon be able go toe to toe with any of the big boys out there.

smile The way it should be.

More soon.

I have a few, any takers?

I don’t know any designers. . . sorry.
6 Comment(s) | Tuesday, July 17, 2007 | General,

There has been a trend the last few months about people/companies finding me, and then asking if I know any friends that are looking for amazing opportunities.

I am sorry to say that I don't know a whole heck of a lot of designers. The ones I do know are super talented (you know who you are), but generally, I know very few people. Even less that I would recommend only because when you recommend someone, you are putting your name on the line. And there are a handful of people that I would do that for.

So, I am sorry to say I cannot help in finding you a designer.

Sorry.

And I am back…

I have taken a hiatus from the blogging thing. But now I am back. A lot of things to talk about. I am sure that you don't want to hear about it. Oh well. I will post it anyways.

More soon.

Building a Web App (Part 2)
9 Comment(s) | Wednesday, April 04, 2007 | General, Web Apps,

Know your technology!!!

What does that mean? I am referencing that you should know in what language that you are developing in.

I decided to write ComicSubz in Ruby on Rails. It is all the rage right? Everyone is using it. Right? That is a ton of crap. If I knew then what I know now, I would not have gotten close to it. A year ago, I heard that you could rapidly develop an application in the language. Well, I have spent close to a year getting something to work in RoR. It has been 1 obstacle after another. Everything from ONLY the developer being able to tweak templates to RoR being quite a memory hog and that the ideal solution is to get a dedicated server and run that exclusivly with a gig or 2 of RAM. WHAT???

Had I know this, I would have called out a search for PHP developers.

Alas, I am ass deep in this project and spent too much money to turn away now.

I am only sorry that this idea is being hindered by a tech issue as opposed to a, well, bad idea issue. That remains to be seen. But I am still hopeful that it will break even. Crossing fingers.

Captain Action Lives Again!!!!!
Monday, March 05, 2007 | Comics, Writing,

image This link over at Comicon's The Pulse intrigued me. It says that Moonstone is looking for pitches to revive the Captain Action property.

Who is Captain Action?

Well, he is primarily a doll that came out in the 60's-70's and was a master of disguise. So Captain Action was also Batman, Spider-man, Superman, etc.

Now they want to do a new comic series based on the character and Moonstone is asking for pitches. I am no writer, but I had an idea. Rather than take the usual route and do nothing, I decided to spring into action. It is a pitch after all. It consists of 2 pages, the max requirement.

Take a read and leave me a comment if you dig or you think it stinks. In which case it sucks, there is a better chance it will fly high in hollywood. smile

Update: I see that you are checking out my pitch. How about, if you read it, let me know what you think. Come on. . .

Tweaking templates and stuff
0 Comment(s) | Monday, March 05, 2007 | General,

It is funny to read about the state of blog design.

I myself am not a big fan of blog design as they are all mostly variations on 3-4 templates. I know this one is pretty straight forward, and I like to keep it that way.

See what Daring Fireball has to say about the state of blog design...

Great Concept, Awesome Site
9 Comment(s) | Friday, February 09, 2007 | Cool, friends, Inspirational,

My friend Derek (or D-Rock as I have grown to call him) started a very interesting venture.

Buttons. Yes, buttons.

He started a site where everyday for the year 2007 he will create a button, with a limited edition of 1 per button, and will post and sell on his site. And at a steal of a price tag if you ask me.

Check it out: http://www.upyourbutton.com/

This is another thing that I will have to keep my eye on daily, and you should too.

Building a Web App (Part 1)
0 Comment(s) | Thursday, February 08, 2007 | Web Apps, Work,

The quick version
DON"T START A WEB APP!!!

---

The not so quick version
Do you like your time? Do you love your family? Do you like to sleep at night knowing that all you have accomplished in your day is done?

If you do, don't start a web app.

For over a year now, it has been a nagging, gnawing feeling in the back of my brain since I put pencil to paper. Don't get me wrong, I am loving what I am doing, but once you commit a certain amount of time and money towards your endeavor, well, failure is an option that does not sit well. So it effects all other aspects of your life (ok, maybe it is just me) that have a free moment to contemplate about that one thing that you want to get done. Your web app.

At this point, I am 66% done with it if I am keeping to my milestones. I am hoping to launch soon. Hoping...

A line in the sand
6 Comment(s) | Monday, January 22, 2007 | Philosophy, Work,

I just wrapped on a project at my new job. It was my first project. . . I inherited it really. It was half started, and by no means, done in any way. The design direction was all over the place. The client was a nightmare, but I pressed on. I made hard decisions along the way. But things were getting done.

Until we got to the last piece of the puzzle. Of course, the last 10% of the project takes 90% of the time, but there was no end point. There was no stake in the ground or line in the sand that said, we are done after this point.

After this project, I realize how important that line is. Not just for a project, but for daily tasks as well.

Example: I need to accomplish this today, so after I am done, I will go home.

Because there was no line, even on the daily tasks, we had many many long nights over the last month. Some probably could have been avoided.

So going forward, if no one draws a line in the sand, in any situation, you have to do it. If not for everybody involved, do it for yourself.

Happy New Year!!!!
